Art Shanties on Medicine Lake
If you haven't already gone, I think they're around for a couple more weeks. We had a lot of fun going last Saturday afternoon, dressing up like penguins and checking out/creating fun art in the cold. They had a karaoke shanty, a "survivor" shanty, and a puppet show, among others. Take a look here for more info on where to go: art shanties

Puppets!

I found out they really do have puppets to check out at our local library! Yay! Hopefully you see my mom with Zaria above, playing with a beautiful orange fish that I checked out today.
I was sad to try on a couple of 12-month-size shirts on Zaria that didn't fit in the arms this morning. What's with that? I liked this outfit I tried on today, though it has the feel of a carpet salesperson to me. And I knew carpet salespeople, working at a flooring place for 2 1/2 years.

Getting back in the groove Or is it a rut? Can't tell sometimes. Jamin says that's why we go on vacation, so we can get out of the rut for a while. It was definitely nice to get away for a while. California was lovely-- Long Beach had perfect weather, and our week at an Indio timeshare place in 107-degree heat wasn't as bad as it could've been. Note to anyone that decides to visit the California desert in the summertime: take the Aerial Tramway! We went up there on one of our first hot days, and it was an amazing 71 degree temp up there. Jamin and I got some great hiking done, even with the "running" stroller we had. Running strollers are actually really good over rocks and sandy stuff, but they have to be lifted to turn, so that gets a little annoying if you take it to say, a mall.
So we had a great visit with Jamin's mom's side of the family, including Zaria getting to meet some of her 2nd cousins (all boys on that side of the family). Jamin's folks and sister Jennie stayed with us at the timeshare, so we had a lot of quality time together. It could've felt like too much time with family, but we managed to do a few things on our own, and it wasn't too bad. Jamin's grandfolks loved meeting Zaria. I'll have to post some pics on our blog sometime soon. I've been trying to get back in the groove of doing homework since I took a break while we were on vacation. I only have 2 tapes left! Hooray! So that means not spending a lot of time doing other things on the computer since I have such a small amount of non-baby time anyway, and I want to get working soon.
I'm just noticing Zaria playing with a circus lion toy that looks like it may have been painted. Uh oh, better check that it's not part of that recall.

Mama Mia Last night I took the opportunity to get student rush tickets to see Mama Mia with my friend Cassie. It was really fun-- I haven't been to a big production like that for a long, long time. I think even those that don't like ABBA might still enjoy it. I wasn't sure that I could still get student tickets since my medical transcription school doesn't exactly give out student IDs since it's an at-home correspondence course. I brought in my latest assignment and course request sheet, and I guess that served the purpose. (= Plus, since it was a Monday night, we were able to get pretty good seats.
I also haven't been away from Zaria for 2 meal times in a row since she was born. So, of course last night she would not take a bottle. She hasn't been doing well with bottles for a long time, but I was in denial because she took them fine the first few months of her life. Apparently, I needed to be giving them on a more regular basis or something. Now I'll have to try some different bottle nipples to see if she'll take a different type.
She didn't starve while I was gone since she has been eating rice cereal and sweet potatoes, and Jamin gave her a little of each. And she probably drank an ounce from the bottle offered. It's frustrating to me to have to throw away milk that takes such effort to prepare.
I've had some on days and off days for being able to study. I've had some pretty serious computer troubles to deal with along the way, like having the printer not work and dealing with report formats vs. automatic features on MS Word. Argh. Then there's the actual studying. I'm sure it'll get easier with practice, but I often spend around 4+ hours of research for some of the more difficult reports. Since I don't get that much time to study all in a row, that also adds to the trouble. I considered starting an editing job that I could do at home after a few hours of training, but I realized that I'd never get done with this training if I was also working another job. So now the goal is to get done by the end of summer. I think it's doable!

Who wants to go to Easter Island?
This is from the fabulous lip sync competition at SLP E Free, for those of you that missed it. Zaria did pretty well during the show, though I think it was hard for her to sleep, so she did get a little cranky. It was fun to see a lot of old faces from the church, since we used to go and haven't been there for a few months now.

I feel like such a 9th grader Yesterday at the library I spent a lot of time looking through the teen section. Jamin had found an audio book by the author M.T. Anderson that he really liked, and asked if I could find another by the same author. I found it, but I also found that there's a whole lot more audio books in the teen section than in the adult section, or so it seemed. What's up with that? I could probably count on one hand the number of audio books I listened to in high school.
Anyway, I did find a book by M.T. Anderson, and I also picked up a videotape on Moby Dick. I never had to read that book for a class, and I was curious about the story (but didn't really want to read the whole book). I watched it yesterday, and it was totally something you would see in a 9th grade English class. I also just finished reading "The Catcher in the Rye," so I was returning that yesterday. Should I feel embarrassed by this? Maybe it stems from people guessing my age as 16 when I'm well into my 20's. Even going around with a baby doesn't necessarily make me any older looking. And I certainly wasn't reading the words of Holden Caulfield aloud to a 2-month-old or allowing her to delve into the psychoses of Captain Ahab. I'm glad to finally know those characters.
I did have a little "grown up" time at the library as well. I've made it a habit to read at least one article in the New England Journal of Medicine while I'm at the library (since you can't check those out). That can be a great way to review medical terminology and learn the names of some new drugs. I'm still attempting to purchase a transcription machine from someone on craigslist-- my studying has been slow-going, and part of it is due to aching finger joints from having to reach over to stop and start and rewind my boom box all the time while doing practice transcription. So it's good to at least be reading material that has medical terminology in it so my mind stays fresh.
I wonder why it even bothers me how old people think I am. They're complete strangers. Yet I don't like the thought of anyone believing me to be a teen mom.

Membership!
redhatter and I shared our testimonies tonight at our small group as part of becoming members at FBC. Then the members in the group voted to say if we could become members . . . so we're members now! How strange. We've never been members of a church before, though we've had a few church "homes" over the years and have been to membership classes. There was always something holding me back before, I guess, and it wasn't necessarily lack of commitment. I think I still have issues with churches that have decided they can't allow any women in leadership roles over men, but that's a whole other subject.
It was strange sharing my testimony. I feel like I should be much better at speaking since I was a communication major, but for some reason when I have to speak about myself it's very difficult for me. I was really nervous about it, and even though I sort of thought about it the last few days and had ideas of what I wanted to say, it didn't quite come out like I'd hoped. God's been such an integral part of my life, it's difficult to know how to share my story--my testimony is basically my whole life story, not just a moment of realization or even just a coming of age.
I think becoming a parent has and will help me to know God in a whole new way, as well. I have a little person depending on me for everything, and it certainly changes one's perspective.

4 feet are better than 2 I took my normal morning walk this morning and apparently didn't have my slip-warry Minnesota feet on yet because I slid pretty well when my feet hit the bike path. I've already fallen a couple of times in the past month because of being so off-balance, so I was really glad when I didn't actually fall this time. And I was very glad to have an extra pair of feet (belonging to redhatter) to help get my walk established. I was amazed at how much my walk changed after a while of walking with him and sort of figuring out how you're supposed to walk on ice. He does it quite naturally. I walked hanging onto his arm, and by the time we got back to that same slippery spot my feet were quite steady and I was confident to walk without support.
It made me think of how our steps change when we start walking with God. How great it would be to walk with Him long enough or well enough to feel confident that I'm taking the same kinds of steps He would take in my place.
On another note, we had redhatter's aunt and uncle over last night for some desert of cookies. I got a little stressed and spent some frantic time trying to make our place look presentable, but it went really well even with me bumping into things in our small place, and even though they didn't get to see our newly cleaned bathroom. Thanks to all of you that were part of the cookie exchange and made such fabulous cookies--it was a joy to share them!

Interesting debate on Monday Jim Wallis and Greg Boyd Monday night at Bethel-- this ought to be very interesting. Unfortunately, I have my first birthing class that same night, but I might be able to come a little late or even leave the birthing class just a little early? To give you a little context, Boyd just wrote a book about the danger of Christians getting into politics and focusing more on the earthly kingdom (including "America worship") rather than focusing on God's kingdom. And Jim Wallis is all about bringing faith into the political discourse and focusing on what we can do as Christians through the context of our current government systems.
Let me know if you're planning to come-- I may be late, but it would definitely be fun to have people to discuss this with if you do come.

Saw Jim Wallis last night Jim Wallis, author of "God's Politics: How the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It," and president/founder(?) of Sojourners/Call to Renewal was in town the last few days for the release of the paperback version of God's Politics. I hope to revisit to write more about what he said-- he's been an inspiration in changing the conversation about the relationship between faith and politics. I think perhaps he's saved a lot of cynics from handing over their faith because of their disgust at the lies and corruption involved with those that demand that Christians must share the complete agenda of the Religious Right in order to be called believers.
I have not been particularly impressed with how the Bush administration has handled keeping a balanced budget, dealing with terrorism, attempting to redefine the Geneva conventions, and a host of other issues. I've been disappointed in a lot of the actions from our evangelical Christian president.
But I was impressed to hear, for example, that Christian leaders are beginning to see the call to fight poverty. Wallis talked of Rick Warren being amazed that he hadn't realized in his years of studying theology how there were 2,000 some Bible verses that dealt with poverty and helping the poor and needy as a matter of calling. So he's started some ministries--just check out the P.E.A.C.E plan, for example: http://www.thepeaceplan.com/, or find out about the upcoming AIDS summit. Wallis talked about how many people have approched him and said things like, "I didn't know I could be a Christian and . . . be concerned about the environment, or disagree with our policies in Iraq, or be disgusted with our current tax system . . ."
I am so refreshed to see Christians mobilizing to deal with issues that affect the world, and making a positive influence on politics.

Crazy dreams Monday night I dreamed that my bangs were WAY out of control and I did some funny 80's style with them to still have bangs. So I woke up, saw the state of my bangs in the morning and trimmed them.
Now I'm hoping this sort of dream/reality connection is not so strong.
Last night I dreamed that I knew I needed to go somewhere (not sure where) and I knew that I would be crucified. In the dream, I was looking through my clothing and trying to figure out what would be a good outfit to be crucified in. I chose the new Risen Drums T-shirt I got from Sonshine. Somewhere in the process of deciding on and putting on this shirt, I started having serious misgivings. Maybe there's some way to get out of this crucifixion thing? I thought about maybe trying to escape and go somewhere else, or perhaps having a hidden stash of poison in my mouth just in case.
So I woke up and in my devotional this morning the subject was how you have to follow Jesus all the way with no turning back, including scripture from the end of Luke 9 talking about potential disciples being turned away because they wanted to make goodbyes or bury a relative. The question comes up then, would I be willing to go where ever Jesus led, even if it meant certain crucifixion? I can't remember exactly how many, but I think several of his 12 disciples were crucified, and I believe all but John were martyred. That's a serious commitment! It's definitely something to chew on.

Baby Z is "Miss Z" Sure enough, I went to an ultrasound appt. yesterday and looks like we're expecting a baby girl! It was a lot of fun for Jamin and I to see her moving around in there. Like she's doing right now, but I have no idea what she's up to.
Interesting factoid: Before actually looking at any parts, our technician thought it was probably a girl because the hands were by the head. Apparently girls tend to keep their hands toward their heads and boys tend to keep their hands down. Strange that there would be a behavior characteristic at such a young age! Our tech said one of the other techs she worked with used to just base his predictions on where the hands were during ultrasounds. She didn't say if he was ever wrong in his predictions, but I wonder . . .
On our way home we stopped at the Plymouth library, just to check it out. I found a book called "What NOT to Name Your Baby." Since it's a girl I get the job of naming, but as we left the clinic, Jamin started calling her Zelda. Sure enough, Zelda's in the book of what NOT to name your baby. Hmmmm. So are Zebulon and Zebediah, which we thought about for boys' names.
I may not agree with all of the author's ideas, but it had a hilarious foreward written by Tucker Fudpucker (yes, his real name). His advice: "Stick with the standards, spell it like it is, and at all costs avoid rhyming." Duly noted. We will not have a Zayden.

Michigan times A few days before we headed out to Michigan, I got my hair cut, and according to the stylist I was the 5th person she had cut hair for that was heading to Michigan for the 4th of July. Strange. Which explains (in part) why there was such a line-up for the tolls in Illinois and we were really late getting into Indianna to stay overnight Saturday.
We had fun visiting my sister and her family, especially my little niece, Becca, who is now 18 months old. She changes so much when I only get to see her twice a year! Anyhow, I found out some very exciting news: my sister is due to have a second child three weeks after my due date! What is it with cousins being so close in age?

Got this idea from yanichka. Took the lyrics from a favorite song, then translated to German, German to French, and French back to English through Google's Translate. Can anyone guess the song? radiojedi and thatkaringirl should get it if no one else does.
I was from here, a felt as million miles faraway under close friend of the skies in more as One-way dreams me was dreamed far. I had the light making blindly, was a hope there were however a time slow line of beginning of release and each day offers to seem considering there eternity.
You never left my side. You never left my understanding.
Thus, do they open their openings, but to be really that which it? And soon enough they fade will far, only curtain them to see however soon must. Fear as a cancer does extend, more wievielen their eyes give up your hands raise and wait, to die, and how much time to spend, to see, at which is? But I think that I received the manner, to me a promise on the understanding know and me will seek, which is meins. Sovereign silence murmurs confidence in me.
In right-hand side a small number when you wish that they be calm.
Stops to wait, I am rather specific. Stops to wait, I am rather specific.
In right-hand side a small number when you wish that they be calm.
And if they try to eliminate your eyes of me, one remembers. And if they try to eliminate your eyes of me, me one remembers.
